last100: Sony’s eBook reader - the numbers are in

I much prefer the look the Sony Reader (not the new touchscreen one), but the price is still too high and Amazon kills it with the wireless EVDO store to buy while mobile. Wish they'd produce an iPhone Kindle client, though the screen is smaller and too bright - not like eInk.

I really hope ebook readers reach a tipping point. They just need to sell enough to start reaping the real benefits of economies of mass.

My mother has had one for a year and still loves it. But she's an avid reader. Are there really enough of those for us to reach a tipping point?

    @ Mari

My Dad's reasoning was that he likes to buy a lot of 'cheap' fiction (mostly crime novels I think), along with more serious books, and doesn't want/need to have hard copies of everything he buys junking up the house. But, yes, he is also an avid reader, so who knows.

    Other info:

Gifts.com is giving away a Kindle! I know that got a lot of you are excited, but I also bet a lot of you may not know what a Kindle is.

The Kindle is certainly one of the more exciting gadgets to come out in the last few years. The Kindle is an easy-to-use digital reader (brought to you by Amazon) which can store books, magazines, newspapers, or other sources of viewable content (including Word documents and images). What’s cooler is that when purchased, all this content is wirelessly loaded onto Kindle, so no computer, cables or syncing is needed. And because of Kindle’s “electronic-paper” display, the reading experience is much like reading a physical book just without the bulk. At just over 10 ounces and thinner than most paper backs, the Kindle can hold about 200 books!

A complete Kindle overview here would take a while, but it’s not an understatement to say the Kindle is a game-changing gadget. Will the Kindle have the same impact on the printed word as the iPod has had on music? It may be a bit early to tell, but it’s not a stretch to imagine a world where everyone has a handheld reader that’s a does-it-all gadget for all things read-able. Bottom line: the Kindle is a great gift for tech lovers and bookworms of all ages. In fact, this gadget is so hot it's on backorder until February, but we promise the pay-off is worth the wait.

Want to win? Post a comment and tell us who the lucky recipient of the Kindle will be (it’s okay if it’s you!) AND what the will be the first book, magazine or newspaper downloaded. Post a comment by 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, December 15. One comment per person, please; multiple comments will be discarded. ONE randomly selected entry will win the Kindle.
