last100: Amazon in your living room: today and in the future

Amazon is jumping into an interesting space. There are some key players like VUDU as well.

Check out my post from early July on this topic.

It will be interesting how Amazon and an internet TV company like Joost interact in this space. Especially with Joost's talk about embedding its software in livingroom hardware (TV's, DVD Players etc.) A concept I find personally intriguing.

What download service doesn't offer the ability to play while it is still downloading? Vongo, Movielink, and Apple all do - what other major players are there? Netflix and CinemaNow? I don't know about either of these...

I've found Unbox quality to be quite bad. I play them on my PC. Huge files (2+gb sometimes!) but worse than a 700mb DivX. I wouldn't actually use it except for the 99 cent weekend rental sales, and I want to support legal digital rentals/downloads at reasonable prices.

Yes, I have to admit the Tivo/Amazon Unbox is a winning combination, especially now that you can buy movies and shows right off your Tivo. But what isn't mentioned here is that both Amazon Unbox and the XBox 360 video rentals provide you with a 24 hour window to completely watch your purchase. This is just ridiculous. If they want to completely challenge the brick-and-mortar video stores and physical media delivery services like Netflix, they need to come to their senses and offer at least 48 hours for new releases and days for older titles. After a long week and finally getting the kids to bed, it's amazing if we get halfway through a movie in one night. We often watch a movie across the span of a weekend. That's why we stay away from Microsoft-DRM'd video. I'm just hoping Apple will offer video rentals soon and offers them with a reasonable viewing window.
